Fort Leonard Wood, Mo – April 12, 2016– After a successful inaugural season, the Farmers’ Market at Fort Leonard Wood and the Post’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) announces that its first market date of the year will be Friday, April 29, 2016 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm. The public is invited to the MWR Rec Plex for tastings, local food selections and other offerings including kid’s activities and educational programming by the Pulaski County Master Gardeners.
Being the only independently established market on a military installation in the country, the market strives to bring together local farmers to support military servicemen and –women, their families, and their community by providing local, quality, producer only foods. A fourth of its vendors are active duty or retired military personnel. The Farmers Market at FLW currently has fifteen vendors that sell a variety of produce, from grass-fed beef and bison meat to artisan goat cheeses and honey.
“Our first season at the Farmers’ Market proved how strong our community is and we hope to continue supporting the mission of our armed services by supplying local, healthy foods that people deserve,” said Samantha Kramer, the Farmers’ Market Manager. “We want to foster sustainable agriculture and really create a vital civic institution for Fort Leonard Wood.”
Following the Defense Department’s Healthy Base Initiative in 2013, motivated individuals and installation leaders gave management oversight to the Pulaski County Workshop of Richland to formally launch the Farmers’ Market at Fort Leonard Wood, which hosted its first season in 2015.
Patrons can visit the market on Fridays during the following dates: April 29, May 13, June 3, June 17, July 1, July 15, August 5, August 19, September 2, September 16, September 30, October 14, and October 28.
